Steve Stanly — Fashion Designer
Introduction
I am Steve Stanly, a textile and fashion designer whose practice explores the intersection of material innovation, traditional craftsmanship, and contemporary culture. My work investigates how textiles can become expressive systems that carry stories, identities, and ecological responsibility. Through experimentation with regenerative materials, artisanal techniques, and emerging technologies, I aim to create work that exists between fashion, research, and material design.
Design Philosophy
I believe design should begin with curiosity rather than aesthetics. Every project starts by understanding the relationship between material, culture, and environment before form is considered. By combining Indian craft traditions with experimental textile processes and computational thinking, I strive to create work that is both emotionally resonant and environmentally conscious where innovation enhances heritage instead of replacing it.
Creative Process
Every collection begins with research. I study materials, cultural references, and natural systems before translating them into sketches, textile experiments, and physical prototypes. Sampling, testing, and refinement become an iterative dialogue between concept and craftsmanship, allowing each piece to evolve organically from idea into finished textile or garment.
Experience
My professional experience spans fashion design, textile development, graphic communication, and production management. Working with FARAK has strengthened my understanding of transforming concepts into commercially viable collections while maintaining craftsmanship and design integrity. Alongside industry practice, freelance collaborations and creative projects have allowed me to explore experimental textiles, storytelling, and multidisciplinary design approaches.
Education
My foundation in fashion design began with a Professional Diploma at Pearl Academy, Jaipur, followed by a Bachelor of Design awarded through Vishwakarma Skills University. These experiences introduced me to textile experimentation, garment construction, and material research while encouraging interdisciplinary thinking. I will continue expanding this practice through the MFA in Textiles at the Rhode Island School of Design, focusing on innovative material systems and regenerative design.
Projects
My projects investigate the evolving relationship between fashion, textiles, craft, and sustainability. Collections such as Scribble to Rebel explore contemporary streetwear through quilting and graffiti inspired expression, while Soil to Skin examines regenerative material cycles and the future of textile design. Each project represents a dialogue between experimentation, research, and craftsmanship.
